SEMANA SANTA

Semana Santa (Holy Week) runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the day when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The activities of the week can be more or less religious in nature, depending on the region. In Spain (especially in Andalusia) there are spectacular nocturnal processions with “pasos”, which are floats carried through the streets on the shoulders of bearers, with huge banks of candles and dramatic sculptures of Jesus - crucified or resurrected - or the Virgin Mary, dressed in elaborate, jewel-studded costumes. The “pasos” are solemnly escorted by “cofrades”, hooded members of a Catholic brotherhood or “cofradía”, who march in step to the beat of a drum. Some walk barefoot and flagellate themselves as a sign of Christian repentance, while the atmosphere on other processions can be much more festive.

OPOSICIONES

When a Spanish person wishes to work in the civil service (this includes becoming a teacher in a state school), he or she has to take oposiciones. These are public examinations held to fill vacancies on a national, provincial or local basis. The positions attained through these exams normally imply a job for life (with a working day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.), and they are much sought after in a country with a tradition of high unemployment. There are usually far too many candidates for every job advertised, so the requirements listed can be extremely rigorous: if you apply to be a postal worker or a clerk you may have to show an in-depth knowledge of the Constitution and of Spanish cultural issues. This is why many people spend years preparing for these examinations, especially for posts with more responsibility.

Avec des verbes

Pendant et pour se traduisent par for, de même que depuis lorsqu’il exprime une durée:

depuis bientôt dix ans

Noter aussi le temps du passé utilisé avec for. Voir d’autres exemples à l’article for dans le dictionnaire.

= they have been married for years

Noter l’ordre des mots et l’utilisation du trait d’union dans les adjectifs composés anglais qui indiquent une durée. Pour les noms anglais dénombrables (wait, delay etc.) on aura:

une attente de six semaines

= a six-week wait

un retard de cinquante minutes

= a fifty-minute delay

une journée de huit heures

= an eight-hour day

Week, month, minute, hour etc., employés comme adjectifs, ne prennent pas la marque du pluriel.

Mais pour les noms nondénombrables (leave, pay etc.), il y a deux traductions possibles:

quatre jours de congé

= four days’ leave ou four days of leave

quatre semaines de salaire

= four weeks’ pay ou four weeks of pay

vingt-cinq ans de bonheur
